Sylvania Fire-EMS (SFE) is an "all hazards" emergency response agency, which provides protection to both Sylvania Township & the City of Sylvania, representing approximately 28 square miles and a combined population of approximately 51,000 residents.
The department responds to approximately 7,500 emergencies annually from four fire/EMS stations located in both Sylvania Township & the City of Sylvania. Sylvania Fire-EMS is a career-oriented fire and emergency services department that currently provides services to the greater Sylvania community with seventy-two line-personnel, one Training Captain, one Fire Marshal, one Community Risk Reduction/Fire Safety Inspector, three Battalion Chiefs, one Assistant Chief, one Chief, one part-time civilian Fire Safety Inspector and two Administrative Assistants.
Sylvania Fire-EMS will hire qualified individuals that contribute to the overall success of our department. Each employee is hired to make significant contributions to Sylvania Fire-EMS.

City Information: Sylvania Township, which includes the City of Sylvania, is one of eleven townships in Lucas County, Ohio. As of the 2020 U. S. Census, the township had a total population of 48,553, making it the second most populous county subdivision in Lucas County, the third most populous subdivision in northwest Ohio and the eighth most populous township in Ohio. The township is governed by a three-member Board of Trustees, a Fiscal Officer and a full-time Administrator. There are seven main departments within the Township: Administration, Fire-EMS, Fiscal, Police, Road, Service and Zoning. The boundaries of Sylvania Township changed in 1867 when the Lucas County Commissioners set apart property within the boundaries of Sylvania Township in order to establish the Village of Sylvania, which became the City of Sylvania in 1960. A jewel in northwest Ohio, Sylvania City and Township have a thriving business community and a large, growing population of affluent professionals.

Age : At least 18 years of age at the time of employment.
Citizenship Required : All applicants must be legally authorized for employment in the United States at the time of employment.
High School Grad/GED : All applicants must have a high school diploma or a high school general education development (GED) certificate.
Valid Driver's License : All applicants must have a current, valid, driver's license at the time of registration. If appointed, this license must be maintained for the duration of your employment.
Ability to Read/Speak English : All applicants must be able to read, write, speak, understand and otherwise communicate fluently in the English language.
Vision : Per NFPA 1582 Standard on Comprehensive Occupational Medical Program for Fire Departments 2022 – Category A medical conditions that would preclude a person from performing as a member in a training or emergency operational environment by presenting a significant risk to the safety and health of the person or others shall include the following: (1) Far visual acuity worse than 20/40 binocular, corrected with contact lenses or spectacles, or far visual acuity worse than 20/100 binocular for wearers of hard contacts or spectacles, or new soft contact lens wearers uncorrected. (2) Color perception – monochromatic vision resulting in inability to use imaging devices such as thermal imaging cameras. (3) Far visual acuity worse than 20/100 in the worse eye, corrected or uncorrected. (4) Monocular vision, stereopsis without fusional capacity, night blindness, or loss of peripheral vision (i.e., horizontal field of vision less than 110 degrees in each eye. (5) Peripheral vision in the horizontal meridian of less than 110 degrees in the better eye or any condition that significantly affects peripheral vision in both eyes. (6) Any eye condition that results in the candidate not being able to perform one or more of the essential job tasks. (7) Near visual acuity less than 20/40 binocular, uncorrected or corrected.Per NFPA 1582 Standard on Comprehensive Medical Program for Fire Departments 2022 – Category B medical conditions that, based on its severity or degree, could preclude a person from performing as a member in a training or emergency operational environment by presenting a significant risk to the safety and health of the person or others shall include the following: (1) Diseases of the eye such as retinal detachment, progressive retinopathy, or optic neuritis. (2) Ophthalmological procedures such as radial keratotomy, Lasik procedure, or repair of retinal detachment. (3) Peripheral vision in the horizontal meridian of less than 110 degrees in the better eye or any condition that significantly affects peripheral vision in both eyes. (4) Amblyopia.
College : Not required, but a degree in Fire Science, Emergency Medical Management or a related field is preferred.
Academy Certification : Current State of Ohio Paramedic certification or a current National Registry Paramedic certification is preferred to continue with the testing process. Please see under "Testing Requirements" above for more information. State of Ohio Firefighter II certification is not required in order to complete this testing process; however, this certification is preferred at the time of appointment.
Prior Experience : Not required, but preferred.
Necessary Certifications : At the time of appointment: State of Ohio Paramedic, ACLS, BLS, ICS-100 and ICS-700 certifications. Please see above under "Testing Requirements" for more information. Ohio Fire Academy, or another academy structured Firefighter II certification is preferred and is required within the first year of appointment. Note: Ohio Revised Code section 505.38 Appointment of Firefighting Personnel (A) states in part: No person shall be appointed as a permanent full-time paid member, whose duties include firefighting, of the fire department of any township or fire district unless that person has received a certificate issued under former section 3303.07 or section 4765.55 of the Revised Code evidencing satisfactory completion of a firefighter training program.
Schooling Prior and Post Hiring : A High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) certificate is required prior to testing for our department. See the necessary certifications above. All applicants will be required to maintain their certifications throughout their employment with Sylvania Fire-EMS. Continuing education to maintain State of Ohio Certifications will be required.

The use of tobacco products, in any form, is prohibited as a condition of employment with Sylvania Fire-EMS.
Due to the acknowledged hazards arising from exposure to environmental tobacco smoke, increased medical costs, and safety factors, it shall be the policy of Sylvania Township to provide a tobacco free environment for all employees. The smoking of any tobacco product, the use of “spit” tobacco and any form of smokeless tobacco is prohibited as a condition of employment with Sylvania Township.
