Vashon Island Fire & Rescue is recruiting for Part-Time Emergency Medical Technicians. The recruitment will be continuous with periodic intake processes. There are current openings.
FireTEAM testing and the candidate PHQ are required.
Applicants must be available to work an assigned rotating shift schedule. Shifts are 24-hours starting at 0715 on every sixth day. Applicants must currently be WA State EMT certified with a minimum of six months EMT experience with a fire department, private ambulance company, or as an ER Tech. Current EVIP certification is highly desirable.

Shift trading is allowed among employees within the same position/rank.
Department Information: Vashon Island Fire & Rescue, a.k.a King County Fire District #13, provides a variety of services including fire suppression, emergency medical service, hazardous materials response, and public safety education. VIFR has one station staffed 24 hours and three volunteer stations. Paid staffing consists of a Fire Chief, Assistant Chief of Operations, Battalion Chief of Training & Safety, four Captains, ten Firefighter/EMT’s, a Maintenance Supervisor, Facilities Manager, and three administrative staff. There are approximately 35 volunteer members. VIFR also sponsors an Explorer post. VIFR is managed by a five-member publicly elected Board of Commissioners.VIFR is a member of the South King County Fire Training Consortium.
City/County/Area Information:Vashon Island Fire & Rescue covers Vashon and Maury islands, an area of 45 square miles with 55 miles of shoreline. There are approximately 1,600 incident responses annually. The district is comprised primarily of residential properties, small commercial operations, and a few manufacturing facilities. Vision: Meet the current minimum NFPA 1582 Non-Supprression Medical Standards
College: Not required
Certification Requirements: Current WA state Emergency Medical Technician certification required.
Emergency Vehicle Incident Prevention certification is highly desirable.
Felony, Criminal Activity Disqualifiers: Conviction of a misdemeanor or felony offense in Washington State, or an offense in another state which would be a felony or misdemeanor if committed in Washington State is a disqualifier.
Prior to employment the candidate must pass a national criminal history background check.
Driving Disqualifiers: A driving abstract of the previous 36 months will be evaluated prior to employment. Any total of six points or greater from the following list is a disqualifier:
DUI (either alcohol or drugs)
Hit and Run – attended
Revocation of license
Denial of issuance of license
Using a motor vehicle in the commission of a felony
Negligent driving with accident
Hit and Run – unattended
Negligent driving with no accident
DWLS (Driving while license suspended)
0-10 over the limit = 2 points
11-20 over the limit = 4 points
21-25 over the limit = 5 points
26+ over the limit = 6 points
Other moving violations not described above with accident = 4 points.
Other moving violations not described above without accident = 2 points.
Drug Use Disqualifiers: Prior to employment the candidate must pass a drug screening. VIFR follows federal laws regarding marijuana use.
Employment Disqualifiers: Evidence that the applicant has willfully provided false or misleading information during the intake process, in his/her online application or Personal History Questionnaire, or has cheated during any testing in the application process will result in disqualification.
Additional: Any conclusion by an oral board panel, background check, or Chief that indicates the candidate is not suited for the position of E.M.T. will result in disqualification.
